Alternative Medicine: Theory of medicine based on the premise that in a normal healthy person, disease symptoms are external signs of activated internal defenses and, as such, should be stimulated not surpressed.

Allergy: An immunological response to a certain substance or substances that causes an individual to develop sneezing, hives, or some other reaction.

Antioxidant: A substance that blocks oxidation reactions in the body, some of which can lead to cellular dysfunction and destruction. Some antioxidant nutrients include beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and zinc.

Aromatherapy: The therapeutic use of essential oils. Treatment is by inhalation, skin application, or oral ingestion.

Chronic Illness: An illness, whether mild or severe, that lasts or recurs consistently for long period of time, or throughout the lifetime of an individual.

Clinical Nutritionist: A professional trained in the interpretation of scientific blood, hair, urine, and saliva testing to determine a person's health imbalances.

Enzyme: Proteins in the body which perform many function. Metobolic enzymes control virtally all body processes. Pancreatic enzymes digest food. Enzymes also exist in raw (i.e., uncooked) plants.

Essential Oil: Aromatic volatile liquids distilled from plants. Not to be confused with vegetable oils such as olive, corn, etc. Essential oils are highly concentrated and more potent than dried herbs.

Homeopathy: Treatment or prevention of a disease with minute doses of a substance that is similar to the causative agent of the disease. Action is similar to vaccination but treatment works more gently, on an energetic or sub atomic level.

Holistic: Viewing the body as a totally integrated system (mind, body, spirit) as a whole as opposed to its component parts.

Hormone: A chemical secretion by the body to regulate certain body functions (i.e., Parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates calcium in the blood). Steroid hormones, which include the male and female sex hormones, are made from cholesterol.

Immune System: A complex network of specialized cells and organs that defend the body against attack from invaders such as bacteria and viruses.

Intestinal Flora: The "friendly" bacteria normally present in the intestines that are necessary for digestion and absorption of certain nutrients.

Ketosis: The result of fat burning caused by abnormally large amounts of protein consumption.

Mineral: An inorganic sustance, such as calcium, magnesium, or sodium, that is required by the body for proper functioning.

Naturopathy: A system of medicine that uses herbs and other natural methods to stimulate the body to heal itself without the use of drugs.

Organic: A term used to describe foods that are grown without the use of synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides, or hormones.

Protein: A nitrogen-containing compound that is an essential constitute to all animal and vegetable tissues, necessary for growth and repair.

Toxin: A substance that is poisonous to the body.

Vitamin: General term for any of several substances essential for normal metabolic processes. Abcense in the diet produces deficiency states (i.e., Vitamin C deficiency produces scurvy). Vitamins can be obtained through food and supplements.
